March 2007:
Greetings from southwest Virginia! It has been a spell since I sent a report ,so lets get caught up with the happenings in District 1. First, I want to touch on our fur processing day Feb 3rd at Linvol and Marilyn Webb's fur shed. We had a packed house 60+ in attendance. Linvol started the day with skinning, fleshing and stretching. There were many youngsters with us, some for the first time. Concerning door prizes, we let the youngsters age 15 and under draw first. After lunch we let all in attendance draw including youngsters. Two young guys went home very happy with a fleshing beam each. Other prizes were fleshing knives, lure stretchers, gun locks, trapper caps and more. Many thanks to all who donated the hand outs. The big hit of the day was Norm Mullins skinning two coyotes. He did the first one in ten minutes and number two in thirteen minutes. He then washed the pelts before stretching. As the afternoon went on, we saw some first year trappers skin, flesh and board fox and raccoon. Many thanks to Linvol and Marilyn Webb for having this annual event. A big thanks to Blue Ridge Mountain Fur Harvesters for furnishing the delicious meal that we all enjoyed!!
Our annual fur sale Feb. 24 was another great success!! We have records of 87 sellers which is almost twice the number we had in 06. Here are the averages of the sale-
Grey Fox-$36.36 Red Fox $18.10 Coyote $17.87 Bobcat $48.09 Skunk $4.39 Raccoon $7.51 Opossum $1.75 Muskrats $5.61 Beaver $18.35 Otter $38.46 Mink $12.78. I personally saw some $7 dollar rats,$17 coons, $50. otter, $20. Mink, $22. yotes,$70.cats and $39. greys sell.
I want to thank the Wythe County Livestock Exchange for having such a great location for our sale. Also, thanks to the church ladies for the great meals that they provided for everyone.
District 1 will be electing a new director at our May 12th meeting at the Pioneer Restaurant in Marion, Va. In order to accomplish this we need as many to attend as possible. Until next time, if I can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me.
See you in Charlottesville.
